Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form students visit Auschwitz - November 2024

On Thursday 7th November, three of our Sixth Form students Elizabeth - Year 13, Benjamin Year 12 and Kacper - Year 13 took part in a one-day visit to Auschwitz I and Auschwitz Birkenau in Poland as part of their Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

Students left bright and very early from school to spend the day exploring pre-war Jewish life in the small town of Oświęcim before heading to Auschwitz I. Students here explored the progression of Anti-Semitism across Europe during the 1930s and the developments, destruction and decimation of communities under National Socialist Rule. Their visit culminated in a moving visit to Auschwitz Bikenau. Here our incredible Sixth Form students not only explored the conditions and structure of the extermination camp, but took part in a poignant Remembrance service, reading extracts from survivor's diaries, poems and lighting candles alongside prayers spoken in Hebrew. Elizabeth also read a poem at the site of the crematorium in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It was an incredibly insightful day, and our Sixth Form students now look forward to meeting a Holocaust survivor, John Dobai Jones, and begin to work on their projects which will see them inform others of the 'Lessons' in which humanity can learn.
