  • Beyond the Poly Week 2023

    Published 10/07/23

Another successful ‘Beyond the Poly Week’ completed!

Year 12 students spent the last week enjoying a variety of workshops and trips as part of their official transition into Year 13. On Friday, all students attended the Step-Up Expo in Olympia, inspiring their choices for education and careers, while Monday was spent at Bloomsbury Institute, working to ‘unleash their creative potential for work’. The week culminated in 1–1 interviews for each student conducted by industry professionals who volunteered their time to work with us. We could not be more grateful. The Year 12 cohort will finish off the year with two weeks’ work experience - Good Luck Year 12!

A special thank you to long-time Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form friend, Wing Commander Calvin Bailey for joining us once again.

  • Staff at WPSfB see former student Ebenezer Gyau in new play 'Dear England'

    Published 06/07/23

We are incredibly proud of Ebenezer. He took A Level Drama after regretting not choosing the subject for GCSE, and he quickly realised this was the subject for him. He listened to feedback to improve, motivated others and would stay late for rehearsals to make sure he was the best he could be. With this dedication we knew he would be ideal for the National Youth Theatre, and he successfully applied whilst at 6th form.

We take the students to see as much theatre as we can, and we often refer to the National Theatre in lessons. When Ebenezer told me he had got the role of Bukayo Saka at the National in Dear England, Ms Coleman, Ms Brunton and I booked our tickets immediately.

To see Ebenezer, centre stage at the National Theatre, holding an audience of over 1000 people in the palm of his hand as he delivers his final monologue, was an incredibly proud moment for the department. I am so proud of him, his work ethic and his humility and I cannot wait to see what he does next. Well done Eb!'

Miss Waine - Head of Drama

Dear England is a play about England football manager Gareth Southgate, the pressures of elite sport, and the role of the national men's football team in the national psyche.

It’s time to change the game.

The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game?

With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.

Written by James Graham, it opened in 2023 at the National Theatre in London starring Joseph Fiennes as Gareth Southgate and directed by Rupert Goold. The title comes from the open letter which Southgate wrote to England fans in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show runs until 11 August 2023, and you can book tickets here: National Theatre

  • FREE Guide - What parents/carers need to know about money muling

    Published 26/06/23

A free online safety guide on money muling.

Criminal organisations digitally ‘launder’ the illegal profits of their operations (including scams and drug deals) by moving funds through innocent-looking accounts, which makes it harder for the police to track. To achieve this, they often recruit young people – money mules – who are trusting enough to be taken in by their advances and simply see an easy way to make some cash.

These impressionable youngsters are sometimes approached to take part in person – but more commonly it happens through social media, where the criminals use euphemistic titles like ‘money transfer agencies’. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide takes a look at this emerging online hazard, highlighting how trusted adults can help to protect young people from money muling.

  • PolyMAT - Who are we?

    Published 16/06/23

We have had a number of new followers across our platforms recently, and we wanted to reintroduce ourselves to those of you who may not know about our trust PolyMAT.

PolyMAT was established in 2014 when our only school was Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, a long-successful 11-18 Comprehensive school serving the people of Thamesmead. Our early priority was to deliver the same quality of provision for girls in Thamesmead, and we set about opening Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls. In September 2019, this became a reality, and we are very proud that we now offer excellent education for up to 2800 students in Thamesmead.

Our Vision is “Success for Everyone” and this places inclusion and well-being at the heart of everything we do. More than anything else, PolyMAT is an organisation that puts people first as we know that they are our greatest asset.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our relationships and the shared desire to give our students the best possible opportunities to become the people that they want to be. We hope that you share our passion for putting people first and creating the most positive environment possible for success to thrive; we always know that we get the best from ourselves when we help others get the best from themselves.
